Moving Day with Laura Ingalls Wilder – May 30, 2026

Step Back in Time with Laura Ingalls Wilder

The Morris Area Public Library is excited to kick off this year’s Summer Adventure programming with a special historical event celebrating pioneer life, storytelling, and America’s history.

Join us on Saturday, May 30 from 1-2PM for “It’s Moving Day for Laura Ingalls Wilder!” presented by Laura Keyes.

In this interactive living history presentation, Laura Ingalls Wilder is preparing for her family’s move from South Dakota to Missouri in the spring of 1894. Attendees will learn about daily pioneer life during the 1870s and 1880s, including the chores Laura completed as a child, the challenges of frontier living, and the treasured belongings families packed for long journeys westward.

Following the presentation, families can enjoy themed craft stations inspired by pioneer life and explore a special historical display on loan from the Grundy County History Museum. The display features a tabletop replica covered wagon along with pioneer artifacts that offer a connection to local and national history.

The program also ties into the nationwide America 250 celebration, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. Through stories and artifacts from the pioneer era, participants can reflect on the perseverance, community spirit, and history that helped shape the nation.

A curated selection of books about Laura Ingalls Wilder, pioneer history, and frontier life will also be available for checkout during the event.

Laura Keyes is a librarian in Central Illinois and has been invited to speak four times at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Legacy and Research Association Conference. Her engaging programs combine storytelling, historical interpretation, and educational fun for audiences of all ages.
