Internet Enabled Tablets for Seniors
Through a grant from the state of Illinois Social Isolation FY20 GR fund, The Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, the Morris Area Public Library, and T-Mobile have partnered up to provide a tablet to seniors, aged 60+, to help them connect to their family, friends and community online. Ideal candidates are those who have already expressed an interest in learning to use technology or becoming more comfortable with using technology.
The Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging will provide tablets with up to 2 years of a data plan, and at the end of the data commitment, the tablet is the property of the participant. The tablets are available to Grundy County residents on a first come, first served basis provided you meet the following requirements:
1. Participants must be age 60 or older.
2. Participants must complete three 1 hour classes.
3. To receive a tablet, participants must complete the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging Welcome Packet which includes an intake form and the UCLA Three Item Loneliness Scale questionnaire. The questionnaire is intended to measure the project’s effectiveness at reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. The welcome kit including these items will be provided to the participants at the first training session.
The Morris Area Public Library will distribute and provide training to program participants. The required training will consist of three (3) one-hour educational workshops/classes for the participants.
Class 1: Technical assistance regarding operation of the tablet, including how to use the camera and microphone amongst the topics.
Class 2: Setting up and accessing email and social media to connect with family and friends.
Class 3: Surfing the web or utilizing apps safely for information, education, banking, health and shopping.
Further optional one on one assistance is available at the library.
In addition to the educational training, the Social Isolation Grant requires that the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, collect certain demographic data on an intake form along with a questionnaire based on the UCLA Three Item Loneliness Scale. The participants will also be required to fill out the 3 item questionnaire again at the end of the grant period or prior to June 30, 2020. This is intended to measure the project’s effectiveness. A welcome kit including these items will be provided to the participants at the first training session.
